While nothing is absolute, Whitman does make an excellent point. The person we are on the inside IS enduring. It’s who we are. It is those qualities that define us and remind others of who we are and what we have to offer. Beauty fades, and health is sadly fleeting, but wisdom, love, joy, and justice, to name a few ensure the test of time.

So while it is good to develop
and maintain good health and appearance, it is far more beneficial to develop
and maintain good and healthy qualities.
